Mother's Day is a wonderful day where we take the time to honour our Mother's / Grandmother's and give thanks for all the little things they do for us. In Australia this day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May but has a few different dates around the world. It's origins date back to America in the 20th century where it is believed a lady who lost her mother chose to have a memorial for her and then campaigned to continue this day of celebration and significance for Mothers. It spread quickly and soon was celebrated all over the world. Other countries had traditions of returning to ones "Mother" church to worship. As Mother's Day is held in Autumn the Chrysanthemum is a beautiful and colourful flower that is readily available. It is not known for sure but because it has the endearment of "mum" in it's name the Chrysanthemum has become one of the countries favourite flower to give to ones Mum. This stunning flower literally means "full of Glory" which it certainly is. Not a common commercially grown flower it is a vibrant and exotic bloom. The Gloriosa is the national flower of Zimbabwe and is also widely grown in India and South Africa and is said to have medicinal qualities. This bright red and yellow bloom is a herb which has small tendrils to help it climb up to four metres long. As a floral designer I love the Gloriosa which is a beautiful and slightly unusual bloom to add interest to an arrangement. It's that time of the year again when we see the beautiful Peony flower. The joy of this bloom is watching it slowly unfurl from a tight ball shape to a large, lush, fluffy and fragrant flower. They range in colours from red, deep magenta, coral and salmon tones, light pink through to white. A very popular wedding choice but sometimes tricky as they have a limited season. Peony flowers are available from Spring through to early Summer but at Blackwood Florist we can also source these lovely flowers from overseas if you have your heart set on some! Blackwood Florist is your local drop off point for the recycling of the Nespresso coffee pods. We strive to keep waste to a minimum and recycle all our green waste so we are proud to work with Nespresso and Terracycle to help these coffee pods not end up in landfill. This is an exceptional program where you can simply drop your pods (in a bag) off and place into the box in store where they will be collected and all parts recycled. The aluminum from the actual pod is collected and recycled, the residual coffee is reused into fertilizer and even your plastic bags they are held in are recycled into various products.
